A Picture of Health Ltd was founded in 2023 by former colleagues and freelancing partners, Marie Clegg and Claire Utting. Based in Leeds, UK, they have over 20 years’ combined experience in the health research and communications industry.
A Picture of Health Ltd was born from a shared sense of the need to provide clear, accessible health information which empowers its user. Experience has shown us that engagement is at the heart of this.
Our mission is to enable people to access clear health information and make informed decisions about their health. Ultimately, we want people to confidently advocate for themselves.

Marie Clegg
An introduction to Claire
Claire is an expert in consumer health information with over 14 years’ working in the healthcare communications industry. She has a wealth of experience in reviewing, designing and testing health information. Claire’s background in the project management of readability user testing studies of package leaflets and instructions for use provided a great knowledge base at the beginning of her career.
One of Claire’s favourite aspects of work is applying her knowledge in readability, health literacy and accessibility to create content that really works in enabling the intended user to make informed health decisions. She has a deep appreciation of the importance of user engagement, whether this be involving patients, carers, lay people or healthcare professionals, in the content creation process. She has a wealth of experience in recruiting defined user groups and conducting surveys and one to one sessions, to discover whether key information is accessible and understood by the intended user.
Claire is an experienced PIF TICK assessor for the Patient Information Forum. Assessing as well as supporting clients in their journey towards PIF TICK certification, the only independently-assessed quality mark for trusted health information.
During her professional life she has worked alongside big and small pharma, consultancies, academic institutions and charities, all presenting different challenges. She takes joy in the variety of work and broad client base she interacts with in her current role as Director. She also values the sharing of experiences and learning from others within the industry, to enhance continuous professional development.
When she is not working, Claire is being mum to her two daughters, down at the bouldering wall, out walking or pretending to be Monty Don in the garden.
An introduction to Marie
Marie is an Information Design Specialist and Human Factors Consultant, who has worked closely with pharma clients in the UK, US and EU for over 10 years. She has garnered significant experience in health research through the readability testing of patient information and usability testing of medical devices before medicines are released on the market. Engaging with patients and healthcare professionals to discover key insights about the design of information and devices is her favourite part the role. User testing is guaranteed to reveal something unexpected!
As well as running fast-paced research projects, Marie supports charities, health comms agencies and pharma companies to achieve PIF TICK certification. The PIF TICK is a hallmark which indicates information is trustworthy and evidence-based, which is essential given the current climate of health misinformation and disinformation. Marie is also a trained health writer and editor with a knack for translating complex information into lay friendly, digestible content for patients and the general public. She understands that optimising the readability, accessibility and usability of health information is vital if we are to improve health outcomes and create health equity.
Like Claire, Marie is happiest outdoors. She is an avid gardener with an RHS Practical Horticulture qualification and enjoys a long hike in the Lakes or Yorkshire Dales with her Patterdale Terrier. If stuck indoors, you will find her on the mat practising yoga, breathwork or Pilates or her head in a good book.
