You may be a charity that provides information to patients, supporters and healthcare professionals, about a particular medical condition. We appreciate how important it is for people to be able to understand this information, to improve health outcomes and create health equity.

We can also engage with your users to check their understanding or test the readability of your information. Based on these findings, we provide evidence-based recommendations to further improve it.

We can also:

  • Engage with patients and the public on your behalf through user testing or user review. The aim of these methods is to check your intended audience’s understanding and gain insight into the readability of your information. PIF TICK support

You might be an organisation that has decided to become PIF TICK certified to show that you produce trusted information that is evidence-based and governed by a robust process. This is especially important given the current climate of disinformation and misinformation in the health industry. Garnering clarity and trust in health information is essential to a brand and its reputation.

Your organisation may already be PIF TICK certified. If you are accredited but lack the time and resource to put your Information Production Process in practice, we can support you by:

  • Testing whether your process works in practice, either using your existing portfolio of information resources or creating new ones.
  • Provide recommendations to streamline your process, improve its efficiency and allow for some flexibility, in line with the 10 PIF TICK criteria.

Contact us to discuss how we can provide consultancy and support to help you achieve PIF TICK certification in as little as 3 months, or support you following accreditation.

We offer different packages to suit your needs.

User engagement

Engaging with users is one of the most important parts of developing health information. It ensures your audience can understand key messages and can be used to test whether information is written in an inclusive, clear, and accessible style.

We can support your user research by:

• Recruiting users who reflect your target audience

• Helping you engage with seldom heard groups

• Conducting surveys, interviews and focus groups on your behalf and sharing key findings, which you can use to further improve your information.

We are skilled at developing questions to test the accessibility, readability and usability of information.

Readability studies (user testing)

To ensure product labelling of a medicine is compliant with regulations, you may require a readability test of a Package Leaflet or Instructions for Use to be compliant with Article 59(3) of Council Directive 2001/83/EC states: “The Package Leaflet shall reflect the results of consultations with target patient groups to ensure that it is legible, clear and easy to use.”

A Picture of Health offers end-to-end project management of readability studies. This includes:

• Client management

• Selection of key points and development of user testing questionnaires. Typically, 12 to 15 key safety messages are selected

• Printing of Package Leaflets and Instructions for Use

• Recruitment of participants, with a range of ages, sexes, employment histories, educational levels and health conditions

• Conduct of user testing interviews, typically n=20 for a standard user test

• Transcription, including timings for finding answers

• Report writing

Once Package Leaflets have been through a robust user testing process, the clarity of the product labelling is enhanced.

User testing methods can be applied to other types of information, besides patient information.
