Case studies
A snapshot of some of the projects we have worked on is provided below:
Review of a charity’s health information resources
Client: A medium-sized UK charity providing support and information for people affected by cancer.
Client’s needs: Review of existing health information resources, in line with the client’s new PIF TICK information production process.
Project:
- Review 4 information resources about cancer: a factsheet for healthcare professionals, and a webpage, key points leaflet and booklet for patients.
- Edit copy in line with best practice readability guidance, information production process and client’s house style.
- Liaise with Research and Information team with regards to references and medical data.
- Seek, consolidate and action feedback from medical, lay and naive reviewers.
- Liaise with communications team and graphic designer about marketing and design updates.
- Sign-off the resources to confirm they are produced in line with the client’s information production process and PIF TICK criteria.
Outcome: Improved clarity, readability and usability of the 4 resources.
The resources were re-launched with the PIF TICK logo, in conjunction with a marketing campaign.

Supporting a charity with PIF TICK certification
Client: A small UK charity providing support and information for people affected by a specific type of lung cancer.
Client’s needs: Consultancy and support in achieving PIF TICK certification.
Project:
- Perform an audit of current organisational processes and practices. This involved discussion with team members to get a clear understanding of their ways of working, so a process could be developed which would work for them.
- Development of an Information Production Process (IPP) and associated documents, in line with PIF TICK criteria.
- Discussion with client about feasibility of draft IPP and further updates.
- Provide training to client on PIF TICK criteria and IPP.
- Prepare for and represent client at PIF TICK assessment.
- Provide debrief to client following assessment.
Outcome: The project took around 3 months to complete. The client was awarded PIF TICK certification for 12 months. We continue to support the client as and when they need it.
Client feedback: “We are a small charity and engaged a Picture of Health to assist us in obtaining the PIF TICK award. They demonstrated a deep understanding of the PIF TICK criteria and worked closely with us to tailor a comprehensive strategy. Thanks to their expert guidance and support, we were able to successfully navigate to PIF TICK certification.”

Testing a charity’s newly developed Information Production Process
Client: A cancer health and wellbeing charity in the UK.
Client’s needs: Test a newly developed Information Production Process (IPP) to determine whether it worked in practice and suggest changes to improve its efficiency.
Project: Review 2 of the charity’s existing information resources using the organisation’s newly developed IPP.
Outcome: Confidence in the robustness of the IPP and its reflection of working practices, while also complying with the PIF TICK criteria.
Client feedback: “We were delighted when A Picture of Health came on board to help us put our first two products through our newly accredited process. It was so reassuring to know that as well as being experts in the production of health information, Claire and Marie are experts in all things PIF TICK. They helped us test out our process and suggested improvements along the way. In addition, they are reliable, conscientious, supportive and a pleasure to work with.”

Readability (user) testing a package leaflet
Client: A regulatory healthcare consultancy in Europe.
Client’s needs: The conduct of interviews for a readability study in the UK to test a package leaflet for a new paediatric oncology product. The study was to be conducted in line with the clients methodology and European Medicines Agency (EMA) guidelines.
Project:
- Provide feedback on the user test questionnaire.
- Use of our participant database to recruit n=25 people for the study, in line with client’s target population group. This included parents and carers of children, people with lower educational levels and those who do not use written documents, a range of ages and mix of sexes.
- Develop informed consent forms and collect participant consent.
- Manage payment of incentives and receipts.
- Conduct pilot interviews (n=5) and main round interviews (n=20).
- Use of client data sheets to transcribe and record data from the interviews.
- Provide client with recommendations to improve leaflet based on study data.
Outcome: All participants were recruited and interviewed within required timelines, to client specifications. Data captured was used to improve the readability of the leaflet, in terms of finding and understanding information. We continue to support the client with user testing of package leaflets and instructions for use (IFU).
Client feedback: “I have been working with Marie and Claire in the area of readability testing for almost 2 years. The collaboration has been great at all times. They respond quickly, always deliver on time and bring their great expertise in patient communication to the projects.”
